Parents’ Mental Health and Children’s Emotional Regulation During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Main Article Content
Abstract
The coronavirus pandemic constitutes itself as a potential stressor for the mental health of children and adults. This study aimed to compare parent's anxiety and depression symptoms, before and during the quarantine, as well to analyze the relationships between these indicators and children's emotional regulation. The sample was composed by 69 parents of children aged between 5 to 12 years old. This study occurred in two moments, one before and another during the pandemic. An increase in parental anxiety and depression was observed during the quarantine. There was a weak negative correlation between parental anxiety with total emotional regulation and with children's emotional regulation factor. Parental anxiety showed a weak positive correlation with the children's lability factor. These results reveal “emotional swings” between parents and childrens during quarantine. This investigation contributes to an initial mapping of the psychological health and emotional development of Brazilian families in the COVID-19 pandemic.
