In the modern imagination, law and science work together to achieve
development. However, both disciplines maintain antagonistic relations because
they work with divergent methods, regimes of truth, and ways of representing
reality. Indeed, thanks to the performative property of language, a legal truth can
end up defeating scientific truth in the world of law. The result is an epistemological
tension that hinders interdisciplinary dialogue and cooperation for the sake
of development. Moreover, state law competes with other normative systems enforced
in social spaces subject to developmental interventions. The limitations of
modern science and modern law in understanding and changing such complex
worlds require new knowledge systems.
