Technical Knowledge of Engineers and Urban Planning: The Case Study of Cristais Paulistas and Orlândia in the Northeast of the State of São Paulo

This article discusses the new range of knowledge and practice on the city in the late nineteenth century knowledge-guided systematic and marked by technological progress. We aim to draw attention to the professional education and training in Brazil, which allowed engineers from various schools to acquire technical knowledge regarding the planning and urban planning. The cities of Cristais Paulista and Orlândia, located within the northeastern State of São Paulo, are presented as case studies. The consolidation of knowledge about the city in the training of engineers academic origins and authors of several of these projects is evaluated in cities throughout the text. We will examine the structure outlined in these urban centers and the teaching program used in the home institutions of professionals responsible for the urban plans of these cities: Luiz Nunes Rodrigues, a graduate of Imperial Escola Agrícola, in Sao Bento das Lages in the State of Bahia, in 1896, author the urban layout Cristais Paulista, and Luiz de Mello Marques, formed in the course of Civil Engineering of the Escola Politécnica of Rio de Janeiro in the late nineteenth century, author of the urban layout of Orlândia.Downloads
