The paper presents the contribution of the sanitary engineer Francisco Saturnino
Rodrigues de Brito to Brazilian cities, in particular the case of Poços de Caldas, in the south of the state of Minas Gerais. The objective of this paper is to discuss the origins of this hydrothermal city, the plan of Companhia Melhoramentos de Poços de Caldas in the decade of 1910 and the project of embellishment and sanitation of the city, proposed by Saturnino de Brito in 1928. It demonstrates how such projects define elements that structure the urban fabric of Poços de Caldas and constitute important layers that define its contemporary urban form. As primary sources, the files of Companhia Melhoramentos and the project of Saturnino de Brito for Poços de Caldas from 1928 have been consulted. Saturnino’s project was part of a large work plan for the complete remodeling of this hydrothermal city where spaces for the thermal treatments were not only places to cure diseases, but they also made up a beautiful, modern and healthy city. The proposal of Saturnino de Brito to Poços de Caldas was determinant for the spatial configuration of the hydrothermal city and its legacy can be recognized until the present day.
