Dialogues between literary and cinematographic art in "Chuvas e trovoadas", by Maria Lúcia Medeiros

Abstract

This article presents an analysis of the short film “Chuvas e Trovoadas” by director Flávia Alfinito, who in 1994 adapted the short story of the same name by Maria Lúcia Medeiros, a writer from Pará, into audiovisual language. The adaptation is seen here as an intersemiotic translation and the procedures used in the process are analyzed. The main objective is to investigate how the elements that make up the plot are modified so that a narrative is re-signified from one artistic language to another. The specific objectives are: a) to describe the script's translation procedures in terms of constancies and modifications; b) to observe how verbal elements are translated non-verbally; c) to reflect on relationships of authorship and re-creation based on the film; d) to reflect on the interview that Maria Lúcia Medeiros (MLM) gave to Professor Arthur Bogéa about her story of poetic inspiration. The approach adopted is comparative and the main theoretical contribution concerns studies involving intersemiotic translation based on Jakobson (1989), theories of adaptation proposed by Stam (2000) and Hutcheon (2006), and the taxonomy on film adaptation proposed by Perdikaki (2017), as well as studies related to translation by Ricoeur (2012).
