Abstract

With a sample of 455 university students of the State of São Paulo/Brazil the author presents the first data of the International Dating Violence Study. The present study is part of an intercultural research to evaluate and explore the frequency and patterns of violence among couples, as well to examine the type of conflict negotiation and its sociocultural effects in the etiology of dating violence. The used instrument was the “Revise Conflict Tactics Scale”.  The findings revealed expressive indexes of aggression between partners with a prevalence of psychological abuse and sexual coercion if compared to physical abuse: 78% of high severity physical aggression are mutual practice among men and women. The presence of gender symmetry associated do data that show that women are more frequently abused by their partners, suggest the need of prevention programs for both, because the findings may lead to the escalation of violence in various forms.
