Reinserction of Deteriorated Urban Spaces to Urban Dynamics

Concepts and instruments to support urban interventions

Abstract

The paper discusses urban interventions directed to the reintegration of degraded spaces to urban dynamics as a form to promote the sustainable city; i.e. the reuse of spatial, socioeconomic and environmental resources. The analysis focus on a proper identification of what led the urban space not to attend the demands of the city anymore and on a definition of urban instruments of management which can help urban interventions be more durable. The methodology examines the evolution of different approaches of urban interventions in order to correlate types of urban degraded spaces and discusses the potencial of urban management tools to support these interventions. The empiric study uses the results of the theorical investigation to analyze the three winers of the public contest destinated to reintegrate the South W3 avenue in Brasilia to the city dynamics: diagnosis, interventions and urban instruments of management tools proposed for its implantation. The results pointed out the emphasis on urban design improvements in the projects and few changes of the uses without indicating urban instruments of management tools capable of promoting the reinsercion of degraded areas to the urban dynamics of the cty.
