In this paper, three case studies in the peropheral neighborhoods of Rio de Janeiro are analyzed. The approach to these built environments and the ways of life of their residents aims to recognize, register and publicize their peculiar forms of space production, which do not correspond to hegemonic models, but are the result of a process of everyday construction. The housing unit that combines live and work activities has a prominent role in the production of its urban environments, which, unlike planned residential areas and in spite of legislation, mixes with houses for strictly residential use. A specific formulation of the concepts of public and private and of repertoire for the design is proposed, according to the recognition of spaces, cultural values, needs and social practices learned from the research.
