Abstract

The sum of material goods and income, schooling, social relations and status constitute power and privilege, that is, distinction. Pierre Bourdieu’s theory is ratified and updated by anthropologist Mariza Corrêa (2003) who discusses the distinction obtained through the distinguished surname, often inherited from the father, or the husband, when acquired through marriage, reflecting on benefits or losses generated by this renaming. Knowing architecture as for a long time mostly a male field, we present, through the case study, an analysis of the family male contribution in the insertion and professional recognition, complemented by the intervention of the masters in academic formation. This paper has analyzed the trajectory of Pernambuco architect Myriam Pessôa de Melo to see how her professional career was influenced or even directed by her father, son, husband and teachers.
