Abstract

From the creation of urban conservation projects in Rio de Janeiro, several historic
buildings were reutilized, and this brought the issue: The adaptations of use of historic
buildings are preserving their aesthetic and historical values, their physical and
documentary aspects and their memory? This paper aims to contribute to the discussion of
the objectives for the preservation of historic urban sets, which should aim at - beyond
material safeguard - preserving their intangible values. The chosen area for the analysis
was the Rua do Ouvidor and its vicinity due to its importance for the history of the city of
Rio de Janeiro. We realized that despite the needs of today being ephemeral, the study
area remained a traditional place for shopping for much of the carioca society.
Nonetheless, we realize in the analysis that there is no reflection, critical and theoretical,
about the memorial documentary character of these historic buildings.
