Cidades sustentáveis e política urbana: considerações sobre a política urbana nacional no Brasil

Abstract

This article objective is to establish relations between the sustainability concept and the urban policies ideas. The sustainability issues constitute a guide line for the urban policy, which, by its turn, can lead to the human settlements’ sustainability. Therefore the human settlements sustainability theoretical fundaments are focused, including a brief view of my own work in this field. Following, I present the urban policy based in four countries experiences that try to reach this thing known as sustainability. After that this analysis is extended to Brazil, including a critical revision of the Brazilian urban policy as a way of achieving sustainability. Finally, some conclusions are presented.
