Abstract

Changes undergone by Western cities in recent years have called for consideration of their built heritage. Large and small cities, with their historic cores or neighborhoods, are threatened with degradation due to urbanization trends reminiscent of industrial urban development, that now affect existing urbanized areas (IPHAN, 2000). Facing this degradation threat, the present work presents preservation and revitalization initiatives in Belém´s historic center, linked to a process of insertion of new land uses, compatible with the area’s historic and specific traits.
