Architecture and Urban Planning Resilient to Flooding: Floodplain Planning and Typologies of Buildings

Accidents associated with urban floods have hit the most disadvantaged social classes and slums. Regarding the environmentally fragile regions Brazilian public policies have directed to the identification, treatment of occupied areas of risk and the largest investments are still employed in helping the victims, and actions so that accidents are minimized or avoided are left the side. Urban floods generate socio-economic and environmental losses increasingly severe. The stance to combat this damage has changed in recent decades and spent the purpose of forecasting and help victims to build buildings and resilient cities. The purpose of this research is to identify the challenges and possibilities of resilient architecture and urbanism in areas susceptible to flooding. The methodological procedure used was a survey of primary and secondary data regarding public policies and national and international building types, with emphasis on the twenty-first century. The results list design solutions that can help new building design processes that help social preservation in case of flooding.Downloads
