Abstract

This research addresses the relationship between memory, identity, and architecture, highlighting the importance of memory as a unique composition of interpersonal reminiscences, which plays an essential role in the construction of human identity. The city, through architecture, is presented as the foundation for the development of cultural, historical, and identity expressions, where different architectural styles reflect traditions, values, and beliefs of a people, influencing their identity and sense of belonging. The article specifically examines the case of the Vila Operária neighborhood in Maringá, in Paraná, showcasing its wooden architecture as a remnant of the city’s past – carrying deep cultural and historical meanings – and analyzes materiality as a way to strengthen collective identity and a potential means of recognizing spaces as sites of memory. The research strategy includes documents, physical and oral records, wich are fundamental for the interpretation of the studied phenomenon.
