Deodoro Sports Complex/Rio de Janeiro
Perception of safety and the use of Olympic equipment in the post-game period

This paper investigates the relationship between the perception of security of different groups of people in Olympic areas and their uses in the post-game period. The study was carried out at the Deodoro Sports Complex, Rio de Janeiro, which hosted the 2016 Olympics. Data were collected through questionnaires, 132 from users of equipment at the Deodoro Sports Complex and 108 from nearby residents. Interviews were also carried out with 32 users, 20 surrounding residents and seven employees of this Complex. Data from the questionnaires were analyzed in the SPSS/PC statistical program using frequencies and non-parametric statistical tests and interviews using interpretations. The results reveal that the perception of insecurity in the Deodoro Sports Complex is sustained by the absence of police monitoring the public open space and by knowledge of crimes in the region. In turn, the fact that people miss greater supervision from guards in large open areas could also be addressed by the inclusion of equipment and activities that serve as user attractors and, therefore, contribute to the supervision of these large areas, such as cafeterias and restaurants.
