Abstract

The city of Santa Maria, located in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul, emerged at the end of the 18th century and preserves an important collection of built remnants that began to face threats due to changes in municipal legislation in 2018. In response to this situation, combined with the population’s lack of recognition of the value of the urban core’s assets, an extensionist group was established at the Franciscan University to engage in heritage education. This initiative resulted in an interpretive project aimed at promoting engagement with the city while fostering its preservation. This article aims to present a single case study of this extension group, named Mapping Memories (Mapeando Memórias), focusing on the development and implementation of the interpretive project as well as complementary tools utilized. The structure of the text includes a literature review on interpretive projects, an explanation of the motivations behind the project’s creation, and accounts of its implementation, in addition to other means of heritage expression and dissemination for the community. Even with the project still underway, the results indicate a growing commitment from property owners and an increased recognition among the lay and young population of buildings that contribute to the city’s historical narrative.
