Innovation in Creative Economy Micro-Enterprises: a Multiple Case Study

Abstract

Purpose: Research about creative economy grew considerably in last years, mainly by the increase of representation that this sector has in the global economy. It is believed that Creative Economy’s organizations have some characteristics that differentiate them for the traditional areas where creativity is relevant in the innovation process. Thus, this paper aims to analyse the process of innovation in the creative economy organizations.

Originality/Gap/Relevance/Implications: Due to still early literature in the Brazilian context, we expect to contribute to it in the business studies field.

Key methodological aspects: We conducted an exploratory qualitative research study on four micro enterprises that are part of the creative industries. The theoretical approach was about innovation in creative organizations, so as it was possible to realize an analysis of innovation in the investigated business from three categories identified in the literature - organization, technology options and customers.

Summary of key results: It was found that these organizations have some characteristics that differ from traditional sectors of the economy, both in the type of innovation and in the way the innovation process is managed. However, it is questionable whether the flexibility that both aids in the flow of ideas and information would be a reality in larger companies.

Key considerations/conclusions: As contributions, this article raised a reflection on creativity and innovation in this segment and also on innovation in creative microenterprises.

Mariana Bianchini Galuk, School of Management/Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS)

Master's student in Management at Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. Bachelor degree in business administration at UFRGS in 2013. She is a member of the research group Gpei, in the School of Management and her research interests are business models, entrepreneurship, clusters, internationalization and innovation.

Aurora Carneiro Zen, School of Management/Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS)

She is professor in Innovation Management and International Business at UFRGS (Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul), Brazil. She is PhD. in Business Management from UFRGS, with a period at Kedge Business School, Marseille, France. Currently, she is also director of Services and Projects at Zenit Science Park. Her research interest are: innovation, science parks and incubators, clusters and international business.

Bruno Anicet Bittencourt, School of Management/Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS)

Graduate (2012), Master (2016) and PhD in Business Management (Sustainability,Technology and Innovation). Researcher in GPEI - Research Group on Strategy, Internationalization and Innovation. His research interests: innovation, clusters and networks, entrepreneurship and learning.

Guilherme Mattos, School of Management/Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS)

He is currently a master's student at the Business School of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) and researches themes related to innovation, technology and business incubators. During his undergraduation course in Business Administration he earned scholarships to study at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (China) and at Kedge Business School (France). He is also part of GPEI research group. 

Daniela Callegaro de Menezes, School of Management/Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS)

Bachelor's at Administration from Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (1995), Master's at Administration from Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (1999) and Doctorate at Multidisciplinary from Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (2006). Professor Adjunto II in School of Management in Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, contributes as a researcher with GPEI (Research Group on Strategy, Innovation and Internationalisation) and GPS (Research Group on Sustainability and Innovation). She also acts as Coordinator of Marketing and Communications and as a consultant in NAGI-UFRGS project (funded by FINEP). She has experience in Administration, with emphasis in Marketing, acting on the following topics: marketing relationship, loyalty, co-creation of valu,e conscious consumer behavior, creative economy and agribusiness.
