LANGUAGE ATTITUDES OF YOUNG PEOPLE IN MACAO
Keywords:
Language attitudes, Matched guise test, MacaoAbstract
This paper aims to investigate the language attitudes of young people in Macao towards Cantonese, standard Putonghua, Cantonese-accented Putonghua, Portuguese, and English, via the matched guise test. The results reveal a high evaluation of Cantonese and standard Putonghua, highlighting the uniqueness of Macau. Additionally, since its return to China, Macao has shown an increase in the evaluation of Portuguese language. The study demonstrates the development of the plural identity of young people in Macao, influenced by three forces simultaneously: local, national, and international. It also reveals that the local and national influences in Macao are more significant than the international influence.
