The mediation of art museums in theacher education

Abstract

This article aims to discuss how the training of art teachers can contribute to the debate on accessibility to art. It addresses the issue related to the low attendance of citizens in exhibition spaces and to the lack of appreciation of art collections and artistic work in society (BOURDIEU, 2007) to reflect on the training of teachers in aesthetic education. In this way, it questions how often art teachers access exhibition spaces and how they mediate human education. It uses the concept of mediation (MARX, 1996) to bring together education, museums, and art teaching. The study analyzed data produced by the Teacher Training Observatory within the scope of Arts Teaching in Brazil and Argentina and in two exhibition spaces, which promote the training of art teachers. The results of this study indicate that teachers and educational institutions play an important role in the aesthetic education of citizens. It highlights museums and art galleries, as mediation spaces, and emphasizes the experience of art teachers as fundamental dimensions to human education, as well as the appreciation of art in society.
