Invisibilidade humana/urbana por meio da distinção espacial no romance Clara dos Anjos, de Lima Barreto

Abstract

Abstract: This article aims to make considerations about the invisibility and dehumanization triggered by the spatial segregation described in the novel Clara dos Anjos by the writer Lima Barreto, which has as its background the city of Rio de Janeiro at the beginning of the First Republic (20th century). During this period, the federal capital underwent several urban transformations, which took place with greater speed in the noblest areas and, much more slowly, in the suburban regions of the city, which also impacts the social relations between the characters in the novel. Among other factors, it appears that social and political conjunctures determine spatial and human exclusion through, for example, the lack of infrastructure for the suburbs. This approach is based on the reflections of Ángel Rama (2015), in A cidade das letras (2015), and Beatriz Rezende, in “Lima Barreto e a República” (1989), among other authors.
