“A FANTASTIC JOURNEY”

The current inquisitive foray brings forward the perceptions and feelings within the paths of Anglo-Americans subjects who departed from their homeland towards the city of João Pessoa, Paraíba. Oral History was applied as a technique and methodology to interview six subjects, between 35 and 70 years old, from May 2012 to November 2013 about their relocations. Critical Discourse Analysis aids in investigating how lexical choices, discursive and social practices unveil understanding about their movements to the city. That said, choosing the city, even though sometimes it may had been pointed out as predestined by fate, owes much to their personal need for adventure and deviation from social destiny. An escape from their origins, a search for personal and professional satisfaction, a home by the beach dream, these are some elements of the contemporaneous urban escapism that may seem individual, at first, but little by little is shaped by marital and familial relationships, key to these subjects’ mobilities.
