This article, as an excerpt from the master's thesis in the area of Portuguese language teaching, aims to discuss reading from a cognitivist perspective based on Kleiman (2016); Freire (2021), Coelho (2000), Meireles (2016) which deal with reading as a worldview, Children's Literature, its function and its formative nature. The research object consists of children's narratives told or read by an adult, to a child, at school or in the family environment, with the corpus being the retelling of these narratives by children aged 4 to 5 years, enrolled in Early Childhood Education. in a municipal education network in the State of São Paulo.
