This work, which is based on the theories explained by Miall and Kuiken (1999 and 2002), aims to make a brief and summary exploration of what has been researched and written on the subject of literary reading in the field of Psychology. To this end, firstly, a definition of literary reading, based on the ideas presents by the aforementioned academics, is outlined. Secondly, still having Miall and Kuiken as basis, an investigation of the emotions involved in the reading of literary narratives and in the phenomenon of catharsis is carried out. Finally, a review of the data revealed by the relevant literature is made. As a conclusion to this work, considering what has been laid out throughout the article, some strategies that might be profitably used by teachers and reading mediators, in order to facilitate people's access to literary reading, are suggested.
