The Impact of Anxiety Disorders on The Quality of Life of People with ASD: A Narrative Review
Keywords:
Autism Spectrum Disorder, Anxiety Disorder, Quality of life, Psychiatric comorbidities, Mental healthAbstract
Anxiety disorders are characterized by excessive fear and anxiety and re[1]lated behavioral disturbances. They differ from each other, starting from the objects or situations that induce anxiety. Anxiety disorders represent the most common comorbidity, with a prevalence rate of 27% for adults with ASD and 42% for any anxiety disorder. Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a condition characterized as a neurodevelopmental disorder, which en[1]compasses persistent impairments in communication and social interaction, and may also present changes in sensory processing. These and other char[1]acteristics limit or impair daily functioning, and when anxiety comorbid with ASD significantly increases difficulties in adaptive responses, decreases quality of life and accentuates problems such as restlessness, passivity, social isolation, aggressiveness, irritability or self-harm. Therefore, this study aims to review the impact on the quality of life of individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and anxiety disorders concomitantly. The meth[1]odology used was a narrative review of the literature, carried out through searches in the electronic database PubMed. The results highlight the im[1]portance and need to carry out more research specifically with young adults diagnosed with ASD, which can contribute to the development of interven[1]tions to act to prevent worsening of symptoms, as well as to reduce the damage in these people’s lives and, as a result, improve the life quality.
