The Construction of Spatial Configurations of the Riverside Communities of the Brazilian Amazon

The Case of the Cristo Ressuscitado Community, in Manacapuru, AM

Abstract

The riverside of the Amazon region faces problems to acquire documents of land ownership because they live in areas of environmental protection. The inclusion of the riverside dwellers in this region as part of the traditional community of the peoples of Brazil was a step forward when recognizing that, if organized in a collective and sustainable way, they can obtain documents that establish the right to housing in these areas. The general objective of the research is to analyze the spatial configurations of the riverside communities and, as specific objectives, the specific ones are to assess the way of life, the division of the territory in terms of community facilities and traditional construction techniques. As a method, the context of the literature review and the case study of the Cristo Ressuscitado community in Manacapuru AM are applied. The tools were field visits with photos and maps of the equipment and rooms. The research concludes that the division of the territory is influenced by the environment, defining the timing and type of planting. The collective division of the várzea land is defined by relationships of trust and family ties. The main facilities of the Cristo Ressuscitado community are the flour mill, school, indoor court and soccer field. The community presents most of the buildings on stilts using traditional wooden construction techniques.
