Fundamental to the task of a critic is to going through the architectural work in its reality, as well as listen to what is said in relation to it – especially the voice of those who inhabit it. Due to this, this investigation analyzes the Bulevar Artigas Housing Complex, one of the most important housing resulting from the Uruguayan cooperative system, designed and built in the early 1970s, through experience and concept. In this context, it seeks to highlight, in addition to the questions that configure cooperatives as actions of evident social nature, also the character of the architectural-urban design – inspired by the revisionist theories of modern architectural and urban precepts, which emerged in Europe in the 1950s – plays an essential role for the consolidation and success of Bulevar Artigas, and other housing cooperatives. Consequently, there is a spatially appropriate housing complex, which has an evident urban liveliness and diverse interrelationships between architecture and the city.
