Abstract

The explosive growth of cities at the beginning of the 21st century, showed for new approaches and suggestions for a sustainable development of cities and improves the quality of life of citizens. The growth of urban areas leads to environmental problems and also social instability. While we develop new technologies and increasing wealth, contribute to social inequality, rising poverty levels. It is important to analyze the role of the public sector in relation to city planning and policies established, the ways in which these factors were responsible for the way that the districts were established and developed. Just as the challenge of reinventing the city in this new century cannot be solved only by action of public power, it is essential to action of private power to this change in perspective. It is necessary to diagnose the current situation of our cities, for the establishment of new proposals and ideas to contribute to a quality of life of future generations. A sustainable environmental, economic and social development. This article proposes the construction of urban sustainability indicators, able to assess sustainability. Promote the integration of sustainability into urban planning processes in Brazilian cities through recommendations for private and public sectors in the desire to promote more sustainable cities.
