Abstract

This paper is about the social meanings of stressed vowels with ingli-ding (voc[e]~voc[eɐ], aqu[i]~aqu[iɐ]) in the Portuguese spoken in Porto Alegre, Rio grande do Sul state, Brazil. The analysis follows Eckert (2008) and shows that the meanings descolado “smart”, descontraído “relaxed”, desencanado “care-free”, preguiçoso “lazy”, com sotaque “with an accent”, morador da área central da cidade “inhabitant of the city center” of the inglided forms are part of a fluid indexical field, subject to (re)interpretation at every language use.

Samuel Gomes de Oliveira, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul

Samuel Gomes de Oliveira possui Licenciatura em Letras - Português/Inglês (2016) e Mestrado em Letras - Estudos da Linguagem (2018) pela UFRGS. Atualmente, é doutorando em Letras - Estudos da Linguagem pela UFRGS e professor de Língua Portuguesa da Prefeitura Municipal de Canoas (RS). Atuou como professor substituto de Língua Inglesa no Colégio de Aplicação da UFRGS (2019), como professor voluntário de Língua Portuguesa no Colégio de Aplicação da UFRGS, por meio do Programa de Educação Continuada (2017), e como professor de Língua Inglesa no Núcleo de Ensino de Línguas em Extensão - NELE/UFRGS (2016-2018). Suas principais áreas de interesse e atuação são: Sociolinguística Variacionista; Fonologia; Ensino de Língua Portuguesa; Variação Linguística e Ensino. Possui registro profissional de ator, tendo participado de espetáculos, cursos de interpretação teatral e atividades de pesquisa em performance.
