The Function of Criticism
Matthew Arnold and Oscar Wilde
Keywords:
Matthew Arnold, Oscar Wilde, criticism, intellectuality, Victorian LiteratureAbstract
This investigation examines Matthew Arnold’s and Oscar Wilde’s theories on the function of criticism in Victorian culture and takes them as reference to reconsider the function of criticism in our contemporary modernity. It examines, more specifically, how Arnold’s theories suggest a more basic conception of criticism—what we can understand as a normative function—, while Wilde’s theories propose an innovative conception even for our current standards—what we can understand as a creative function.
