Abstract

 In Urupês (1918), Monteiro Lobato revisits themes from two previous articles – “Urupês” and “Uma Velha Praga” – in which he condemns the idealization of what he calls “caboclismo”, as well as the predatory behavior of regional people residing in primitive conditions in the countryside of São Paulo. The approach to those topics takes place through short stories that reveal an anachronistic society in which, on the one hand, predominates themandonism, on the other, the subalternity. The result of these confrontation is the destruction of human beeings and nature, showing the tragic character of the represented world.
