The linguistic sign
“An important question of terminology”
Keywords:
Saussure. Linguistic sign. Terminology.Abstract
This work investigates the use of the term sign in Saussure’s Third Course of Lectures on General Linguistics, according to Constantin’s notebooks.
It discusses the criticisms of the concept, the proposals of its definition and the oscillation of its use in the classes. The analysis refers to the original course’s plan which was discussing the general concept of la langue based on the analysis of les langues. It also seeks to clarify the theoretical context of comparative grammar, which justifies Saussure’s intention to specify the concept of sign and establish, from it, the transition to the concept of value.
