Saussure, Benveniste and Greimas
Some considerations about “I” and “you”
Abstract
In this paper we collect conceptions of three linguists – Ferdinand de Saussure, Émile Benveniste and Algirdas Julius Greimas – around the items “I” and “you”. Such elements are called “deictic”, because they depend on the context of utterance to be interpreted. We do not find in the Course of General Linguistics considerations about them. We note, however, that Saussure think is relevant to study contextual influence in language. For Benveniste, it is inconceivable occur enunciation without establish an “I” and a “you”. Finally, Greimas, extending Benveniste’s conceptions, affirms that it is possible to erase marks of person in some texts that he called “enuncives”.
