Abstract

This article aims to explain the importance of bioethics in education and specifically reinforce its relevance in values education. To carry out this analysis, we resort to the principlist theory, the first and most influential theoretical approach in bioethics presented by the philosopher Tom Beauchamp and the theologian James Childress, in the book Principles of Biomedical Ethics, first published in 1979. Principlism, as this theory is often called, became globally known for defending four ethical principles to resolve practical dilemmas in biomedicine: respect for autonomy, non-maleficence, beneficence, and justice. The influence of these principles on clinical ethics and the relationship between healthcare professionals and patients is undeniable, and their application is presented in several international declarations and codes of professional ethics. Considering the impact of these principles on the problematization of bioethical issues, we seek to explore possible ways of incorporating principlism in Education to improve the relationship between teachers and students. To this end, we explore two proposals in which principlism can take place: first, in the discussion of case studies in the classroom and, second, in the elaboration of a Code of Teaching Ethics, which expresses the values by which the teaching profession is ruled in its interactions with its students.
