Abstract

The streets and public spaces in cities have been perceived by adults as unsuitable for children because of violence and the movement of people and vehicles. Thus, there is a tendency to internalize and institutionalize the spaces for play. This study aims investigate, through the eyes of the children themselves, what their favorites places to play outside. For that, 39 children, boys and girls of low socioeconomic status and high school, living in the city of Salvador, were asked to photograph their favorite places to play away from home and school and were interviewed about the contents of the photographs and recorded jokes about which there were developed. The results indicate that the region in front of houses and buildings of playgrounds were the most chosen for the children. In these places the children reported playing more competitive games, make-account and outdoor play, mostly using existing elements in places such as sidewalks and stairs.
