Abstract

In recent years there has been an increase in Aesthetic Plastic Surgeries (APS) in the world and in Brazil. Women were more dissatisfied with their appearance than men, and this is one of the main reasons for the search for APS. We investigated the Body Image (BI) and Nutritional Status (NS) of female applicants for APS in a Private Clinic in Ribeirão Preto, SP, Brazil, with 40 adult women (Clinical and Comparison Group) of similar age, educational and socioeconomic characteristics. They were submitted to Nutrition Status Assessment and Biochemical Analysis of blood and urine. The Clinical Group pointed to overweight/obesity, dissatisfaction with BI since childhood, adoption of diets without nutritional monitoring, a great concern with BMI, use of psychotropics and psychotherapeutic follow-up. Different results were found in the Comparison Group. Therefore, attention to NS and psychotherapeutic follow-up focused on individual needs and program initiatives directed at positive BI is essential.
