Abstract

This article analyzes O Auto da Compadecida from the perspective of adaptation and intermediality, tracing its trajectory from the 1955 theatrical text to the acclaimed 2000 film version. Drawing on Linda Hutcheon’s theory of adaptation and on the intertextuality framework developed by Koch, Bentes, and Cavalcante, the study examines how Guel Arraes’s film transforms and recreates elements of Ariano Suassuna’s work. It also incorporates Braulio Tavares’s reflections on the Northeastern storytelling tradition, understood as a continuous process of retelling that travels across generations and media. The article highlights character modifications, narrative choices, and audiovisual strategies that update the meanings of the original play, arguing that adaptation is not derivative but a creative practice that keeps foundational cultural narratives alive.
