Physical activity and leisure in Down syndrome: an integrative review

Abstract

Introduction: Down syndrome (DS) is the most common form of chromosomal abnormality in humans and is associated with intellectual and physiological deficiencies. Physical activity is a resource used to minimize changes in DS. The levels of physical activity practiced by adults with DS are low in relation to the typical population, predisposing them to obesity and other chronic diseases. In addition, there are a number of facilitators and barriers that cooperate for the regular practice of physical activity and leisure, such as family support, therapeutic approaches, social opportunities and the very physiological characteristics present in DS. Objective: scientific analysis of physical activity and leisure in Down syndrome. Method: this article included scientific articles indexed in the SciELO, Lilacs, Cochrane, PEDro, PubMed and Pepsic databases, such as randomized trials, written in Portuguese and English between 2010 and 2020. Result: 1237 articles were found in the searches. In the screening by title and abstract, 1227 articles were excluded, 10 of which were selected for full reading and inclusion in this review. The selected articles were grouped into: a) correlation between physical activity and DS and b) correlation between leisure and DS. Conclusion: Few articles address the themes studied in this study, however, the literature shows that there is low engagement of this population in the practice of physical activity and low incentive to engage in leisure activities.
