The decrease in pulmonary function in people with DMD contributes to a significant morbidity due to the progressive weakness of the respiratory muscles. Assessing and measuring respiratory pressures is of clinical relevance for therapeutic adequacy and a decrease in morbidity. The characterization of respiratory function of this population is well described worldwide, using pulmonary function tests that are performed with specific instruments and include measures of maximal respiratory pressures. Objectives: Identifying and characterizing the main criteria and instruments for evaluating MIP and MEP in pulmonary functions of people with DMD. Method: This study is an analytical bibliographic review of scientific articles, and was subdivided into four phases: collection, selection, tabulation of data and characterization of evaluation instruments. The terms used in Portuguese were: Distrofia muscular de Duchenne e/ou pressões respiratórias máximas e/ou faixa etária. In English: Duchenne muscular dystrophy and/or maximal respiratory pressure and/or age group. Inclusion criteria was used to select the articles. Results: the results were tabulated according to the number of patients, objectives, inclusion criteria and evaluation instruments. Conclusion: Of the researched articles, only one used the evaluation criteria for people with neuromuscular diseases described by the American Thoracic Society (ATS), and not one of them follow a standardization of the instrument to be used in the assessment of MIP and MEP of people with DMD. We concluded that, due to the great variability in the clinical development of this disease, there is a difficulty in determining the evaluation criteria. But the evaluations used, which were developed with patterns of non-sick people, are still options for correlating a standard of respiratory function evaluation, and they include the age and the instrument used.
