Analysis of Visual and Non-Visual Effects of Daylighting: Benefits and Strategies

The objective of this paper is to show the relationship of daylighting with visual and non-visual benefits to users, discussing factors and strategies that can be applied to achieve these benefits. Light induces both visual and non-visual responses, and thus studies should address and give more consideration to issues beyond lighting performance, such as user perception and the influence on health.
As strategies for improving visual comfort, more efficient systems such as advanced daylighting systems that can reduce negative effects of lighting and maximize the positive effects can be used. Due to the important impact of non-visual responses on the welfare and health of people, research on new models that enable designers and lighting specialists to predict these factors should increase. These factors should be considered from the initial stage of the project, and given the same importance as the luminous performance.
The research on the impacts and effects of daylighting should be developed as an interdisciplinary work, by researchers from different fields to study the various elements associated with lighting. Daylighting significantly influences psychological, physical and physiological aspects of the human being, and ensure well-being and visual comfort, also with its proper implementation achieves good lighting performance and energy savings.
