The context of contemporary urban space production points, in addition to a deficit of qualified public spaces, the existence of residual and idle spaces within cities. The present work discusses the collaborative urban microinterventions, which, stimulated by social activism and yearning for the qualification of public spaces, promote transformations that transcend the physical space. In this sense, the paper discusses the social role of urban microintervention projects, considering the collaborative process that involves different social actors. Therefore, the literature review addresses topics such as the alternative production of contemporary space and the relationship between person and space. The analysis involves two case studies, perfomed in the cities of Vila Velha and Vitória, state of Espírito Santo, in order to understand the transformations in the public space and the involvement of social actors in different contexts. The research shows that urban microinterventions promote significant socio-spatial transformations, especially in fragile contexts, as they offer new possibilities for living and social interaction. Community involvement and engagement, at all stages of the process, was understood as a differential for the final result of the proposals and as a response to the social role of microinterventions.
