As part of the problem of desertification in the Central Region of Beira Interior in Portugal, there were models of intervention, recovery and rehabilitation of heritage, as strategies of local and regional development. Supporting itself in the paradigms and methods of rehabilitation of heritage, this study aims to identify and characterize the different programs and their models of the Village of Beira Interior. These models of intervention — Historical Village and Slate Village — have one common goal: to reverse the trend of abandonment of settlements and counteract the state of progressive degradation of landscape and built heritage. Studies and observation of work done in recent years within the Villages Program indicate that it is possible to reverse the trend of disintegration and desertification of the country’s interior territories and communities. This research has enabled the creation of a database, the updating of the village model, the application of principles and guidelines that support the implementation and operability of interventions, and the transfer of scientific and technical knowledge to the community.Downloads
