Abstract

This article discusses the marks of proximity between the play “Auto da Compadecida”, by Ariano Suassuna, and the Greek myth of Orpheus. In addition to the work is commonly associated with the plays of Gil Vicente and the Spanish theater of the 17th century, João Grilo's judgment revolves around the mytheme of the return of the dead. The debate about Orpheus is based on Bulfinch (2002) and Brunel (2000). The theoretical review also brings reflections of Campbell (2010) and Eliade (2002). The corpus of analysis is focused on the third act of Suassuna's text, from selected excerpts that explore similarities and differences in relation to the myth.
