Abstract

Cantos IX to XII of the Odyssey, a Greek work attributed to Homer, has as its narrator its protagonist, Ulysses, who presents part of his adventures across the seas. The encounter with several creatures, described during this section of the epic, is extremely important for us to understand the pattern of “human” and “civilized” in the work, ideals that are largely dictated by the context of its production and the oral tradition by which it passed until its fixation. Such analysis allows us to further understand the social function of Homeric productions, as well as the aedos, responsible for transmitting it.
