Fairy-Stories and Master Stories
An Application of Worldview in Tree and Leaf
Keywords:
Worldview, Fantasy, TolkienAbstract
Among the various approaches to studying the relationship between a work and its author, one can be undertaken within the philosophical-theological realm: through the lens of Worldview. Based on this, the article explores the application of the concept of worldview in J. R. R. Tolkien's Tree and Leaf. Worldview is a concept originating in German philosophy and expanded upon by theologians like Abraham Kuyper and James Sire, and here it is used to analyze how Tolkien expresses his Christian beliefs through fantasy narratives. Tolkien defends fantasy as a natural human activity, reflecting humanity's condition as sub-creators, made in the image of God. Fairy stories, for him, help readers see the world with fresh eyes and offer a happy ending, mirroring the Christian narrative of redemption. The article concludes that Tolkien's worldview manifests itself coherently and deeply in his works.
