(Re)categorization and argumentative orientation in the referential construction of Jean Valjean in Les Misérables

The main objective of this article is to analyze the referencing (re)categorization of the character Jean Valjean in the excerpts of Les Misérables (1967, 2014), a novel by Victor Hugo. We also intend to observe how the argumentative direction that the referential nominal expressions attributed to Jean Valjean favor the construction and deconstruction of the representation of humanity. The analysis is based on the concepts of category and referential from a discursive perspective, as presented by Ciulla (2014), Elias and Cavalcante (2018), and Cavalcante and Matos (2016). The works by Koch (2021) and Koch and Elias (2020) will be used for the referencing. The paper suggests that using the Textual Linguistics conceptual framework allows for identifying depersonification and repersonificaton strategies, which are vital in producing the narrative effect of presenting the duality of the character Jean Valjean.
