A functionalist view of the adjective in the function of adnominal adjunct in news stories and their respective headlines

Starting from the claims of traditional grammars that the adjective, in adnominal adjunct function, is an irrelevant and unnecessary term for the meaning and understanding of the utterance, we propose, in this paper, the analysis of the functional behavior of the adjective, as adnominal adjunct, in online newspaper news and their respective headlines. To support our discussion, we resort to the assumptions of Linguistic Functionalism and the principles of iconicity and information structure to explain such functioning. The study allowed us to notice that the adjective, in this function, is essential to the textual construction, since it is related to the purpose of the enunciation and the communicative situation.
