Four pillars of grammatical tradition

This study deals with two questions. The first one discusses four works considered the pillars of the grammatical tradition. The second one examines the conceptions of traditional, normative, and descriptive grammar based on the ideas presented in the first part of this study. In this sense, the reader can understand that the influence of Dionysius Thrax established the organization of contentes in the grammatical text and strongly determined its purpose. Some conceptions of grammar discussed here are evident reflections of the initial idea held by Dionysius and represent traditional grammar. These conceptions still inhabit the pages of contemporary grammars alongside the normative (prescriptivist) and descriptive (descriptivist) strands.
