Abstract

This article analyzes the role of collective memory (Halbwachs, 2006) in the preservation and resignification of the Araguaia Guerrilla, focusing on the urban legend that associates the figure of Che Guevara with the city of Imperatriz. From a semiotic perspective, we investigate how this popular narrative is consolidated around a historical episode marked by resistance and by the violence of the Brazilian military regime in the Tocantina Region. Our aim, therefore, is to discuss the discursive strategies mobilized to produce an effect of truth in the enunciation about Che Guevara’s alleged passage through Imperatriz, intertwining history and fiction.
