Abstract

Family involvement is essential for positive results with interventions and for the learning of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The literature demonstrates that the use of tablets is a resource that complements therapies and teaching for the children with ASD. Tablet application accessibility is an important issue of access because it guarantees comprehension and usability to the users. The goal of the present paper was to access accessibility of a different applications available to practice different abilities for children with TEA. This study was structured in three levels: Identification of apps available and related to children with ASD; categorization of the apps regarding the skills trained; Assessment and ranking of the apps based on accessibility guidelines. The most common characteristics found in the apps include simple interface, avoidance of distractors, and clear instructions. The accessibility characteristics that needed expansion included possibility of reversing or need for confirmation of actions, and customization of the app, for example. The listing and raking of these characteristics informed users, their families, teachers and professionals what to look for in an app. In addition, the guidelines aide in the development of new apps for children with ASD, and demonstrate the important of developing studies of effectiveness of the use of these apps for the learning of new skills in ASD.
