How to Design with People Living in Socially Vulnerable Areas?

The Integration Office provides direct technical assistance to social groups that are self-producers of space in the Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte. Its methodological proposal is based on the friction between the knowledge and the experience of the residents, who self-produce their territory, and the technicians, in this case, professors and students of the Architecture and Urbanism Course of PUC Minas. It is not only to investigate what distances us and what brings us closer, but also to overcome paradigms of urbanization that impoverish daily life and degrade life. Such a proposal is guided both by of the impacts – on the territory, the daily life and the work - of the predominant urbanization techniques in the so-called formal city and reproduced in the informal city, as to the finding that the incompleteness of urbanization in self-produced territories, associated with its potential self-management, is a condition open to the experimentation of urbanization processes and techniques. Focused since 2014 on three urban occupations that are the object of the most serious urban land conflict in Brazil, the work, always intense, this time consisted of a provocation. By means of direct actions whose effect was intended to be immediate, it was a simultaneous exercise of criticism of urbanization processes and techniques in progress and recognition of others who, not necessarily unknown or alternative, are not considered. Specifically, attention was paid to the specific demands of the residents as a strategy for the frank approach of the processes by which these demands multiply and worsen.Downloads
